East Freo Sharks Partner with Netball

Tuesday, August 28, 2018 - 11:26 AM

The East Fremantle Football Club is excited to announce our partnership with Fremantle Netball Association (FNA) for the next three years.

The ‘East Freo Sharks Netball’ will compete against 6 other teams in the new West Australian Netball League (WANL) competition in 2019-2021.

East Fremantle Football Club CEO Todd Shimmon said there were several reasons for the club going into a partnership with FNA.

“Our long-term strategy for the Club is to link in with local community to provide a modern sporting precinct where all sports can prosper,” Shimmon said.

“We are currently working with the Town of East Fremantle on a masterplan to redevelop the East Fremantle Oval precinct,”

“Part of the plan is to build indoor netball courts in the redevelopment.”

With 10,000 players and supporters passing through Fremantle’s home of netball, Gibson Park every weekend, this will enable more young sportspeople to utilise the new potential shared facility.

The East Fremantle Football Club has a long-standing association the with Coastal Sharks Netball Club, having housed their admin area as part of the club for the past 15 years. In the last 5 years, East Fremantle have sponsored the Coastal Sharks and have been delighted in the way FNA run their junior programs.

Shimmon stated that both parties would benefit from the partnership, with community importance at the core of both.

“The partnership is about spreading our brand into the Netball area of our local community, but also providing the FNA with sponsorship and professional expertise to help run their elite programs,” Shimmon said.

The Sharks look forward to working in conjunction with FNA to give young athletes the best opportunity to thrive.

Sharks Seek Premiership Glory

Friday, August 24, 2018 - 4:10 PM

The East Fremantle Women’s League team take on Subiaco this Sunday at Claremont Oval for the biggest day on the football calendar.

The Sharks have dominated in season 2018, dropping only one game before finishing with the minor premiership. Earning themselves a home semi-final, the girls convincingly beat second placed Peel to progress to the grand final. There is a mixture of excitement and nerves amongst the playing group according to East Fremantle’s Head Coach Nikki Harwood.

“We’re all really looking forward to the game! I’m sure there are plenty of nerves around, especially those who haven’t played in a Grand Final before,” Harwood said.

When it comes to preparation, Harwood has tried to keep their on-field training the same as usual and treat it like any other game.

League Squad

“The only thing we’ve done differently is we invited Sam Mitchell to come down on Wednesday night and speak to the Youth Girls and League players who are playing this weekend.”

“He shared his experiences and answered any questions the girls had. It was a fantastic session and I’m sure they will all take away something of value and apply it to their game on Sunday but also their football careers going further.”

The Sharks go into Sunday with the upper hand, having beaten Subiaco in all three encounters this season but Harwood isn’t expecting an easy game.

“Despite winning all 3 games this season, 2 of those games came down to the wire and could’ve gone either way,” Harwood said.

“Their talls are very good overhead and they have some great midfielders, so the good thing is, that having played them 3 times, we know what to expect and know we can match it with them.”

“Half way through the season I was confident that if Subiaco were to qualify for finals that they’d make it through to the GF. They are a quality team and it’ll take our best effort to beat them.”

After a thrilling semi-final that went into overtime, the East Fremantle Youth Girls prevailed by seven points to secure a spot in the grand final.

The Sharks have a big challenge taking on the undefeated Peel Thunderbirds but have continually impressed especially in the final series.

Thrifty Match Day | East vs South

Friday, August 24, 2018 - 9:30 AM

The Sharks host rivals South Fremantle on Saturday as part of Thrifty Match Day.

It’s been a tough year for East Fremantle, but they’ll be putting everything on the line to get the win for Rob Wiley in his last game as head coach.

Into the 25 this week comes Tim Bockman, Jye Clements, Mick Cronan, Jarrad Jansen and Leon Pearton.

The Bulldogs have the upper hand when it comes to derbies in recent times, however the Sharks have beaten the odds before and will look to do so again.

The sides are playing for the Bob Uittenbroek (OAM)  – Brian Ciccotosto Cup, in honour of two fine servants of both clubs.  Bob was General Manager at East Fremantle for 32 years, is an East Fremantle Life Member, WAFC Life Member, WAFL Life Member and was awarded an Order of Australia for services to Australian Rules Football in 2013.  Brian Ciccotosto was General Manager at South Fremantle for 27 years following a 211-game playing career which included a Simpson Medal in 1970 Premiership and is also a South Fremantle and WAFC Life Member.

The Development League will also be looking to finish the season on a high after a testing year. With injuries plaguing our seniors, it’s has been hard to get a regular team on the track.

The Colts will look to consolidate their position on the ladder, with a win over South Fremantle on Sunday at Domain Stadium.

For the second time this year, our young Sharks will be involved in a WAFC initiative which sees consecutive Colts games played on the same day. (More information here).
