Sharks bolstered by debutants

Friday, May 4, 2018 - 12:17 PM

The Sharks could blood up to four debutants when they take on East Perth at home this Sunday.

Ex-AFL recruit Cameron Loersch and Fraser Daly will make their debuts while Daniel Borgogno and Chris Scott are in the mix to play their first league game for the Blue and Whites.

Standing at 203cm, Loersch is known for his ability to take a strong contested mark. A forward with an excellent kick in front of goal, Loersch can also move into the ruck. Selected in the 2016 AFL Rookie Draft, the 22-year-old returned to WA after 2 years on the Gold Coast Suns’ list. Loersch has struggled with injury but made a positive return to the reserves, kicking 5 goals in the last two weeks.  When speaking about playing his first senior match for his new club Loersch said “I’m excited about my first game with the Sharks, I hope to do the jumper and club proud.”

Daly’s start to the 2018 reserves season has been fantastic. Historically a defender, he’s moved forward in recent weeks, booting 4 goals including the match winner in round 2. Daly, who made the move to Perth a couple of years ago via Towns FC in our Geraldton country zone, is a passionate and loyal Shark that always gives 100%.  On making his debut, Daly said “it’s a great honour and privilege to be playing league football for the club I love.”

Borgogno, a developing ruckman, missed the early part of the season but has shown some promising signs in the last two weeks. With the loss of Griffin this week, Borgogno provides another tall target for the Sharks.

2017 Colt premiership player, Chris Scott is a strong defender with a great intercept mark. Scott also came through the Geraldton country zone (Rovers FC) and had an outstanding 2017 season in the colts, culminating with the Mel Whinnen Medal for best on ground in the Grand Final.

As the coaching group promised, nine changes have been made to the squad, with Josh Cuneo, Ben Harding, Sean Henson, Corey Holmes and Leon Pearton coming into the extended 26-man side.

Unfortunately for the Sharks our injury woes continue with Jon Griffin, Alex Howson and Matthew Jupp all missing this week’s match (see injury list here).

Sunday’s match is set to be a tough one for our young side with up to 10 AFL listed players set to boost the Royals side, but a positive feeling on the track holds the group in good stead to put the previous couple of weeks behind them and be ready to play come Sunday.

Two Sharks in initial WAFL State Squad

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 - 3:18 PM

Two Sharks have been named in the initial WAFL State Squad that will take on South Australia at Adelaide Oval this month.

Following strong individual starts to the year, Jonathon Marsh and Jayden Schofield were selected in the 33-man squad.

Marsh was the only Shark to play in last years historic win against Victoria in Melbourne. He was praised for his physical strength throughout the backline, in a performance that overwhelmed the Vic’s.

Schofield was unlucky to miss selection last year but has certainly made his case in 2018. The reigning Lynn Medallist is averaging 30 disposals this season and continues to provide a strong drive off half back.

Successful 2017 WAFL State Coach Michael Broadbridge, who led WA to an historic win over the VFL in Melbourne last year, will be at the helm again

WA hasn’t won a State Game in South Australia since a 14-point victory at Football Park in 1994.

The match will take place on Saturday May 12th at 11:40am (AWST) at Adelaide Oval. The State Game will be an opener for the Port Adelaide v Adelaide clash.

Round 5 Preview

Friday, April 27, 2018 - 9:53 PM

After a soul-searching week at Shark Park following the disappointment of Sunday’s Derby, the boys are ready to turn it around when they take on Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

Each year the two league teams battle it out for the Joyce Allen/Kerry Coates Cup in recognition of Motor Neuron Disease (MND), with both clubs having lost patrons to the horrific disease. As a sign of solidarity, the players on both teams will wear blue armbands.

The coaching staff were quick to address last week’s loss and made the following changes to the side facing the Swans.

Into the 25 come youngsters, Matthew Burton, Ben Harding and James Harrold as well as potential debutants Zac Jackson, Cameron Loersch and Jesse Wynne.

The Sharks luckless time with injuries has continued, with Cameron Eardley, Sean Henson and Ambrose Ryan all missing from this week’s side, (see full injury list here).

It will certainly be a tough contest for our boys, with the Swans also determined to return to the winner’s circle after two losses.

The Colts will play their match at Fremantle Community Bank Oval as part of a WAFC initiative, read more

Sharks ready for ANZAC Derby showdown

Friday, April 20, 2018 - 2:17 PM

The stakes for the ANZAC Derby are as high as ever, with the Sharks desperate for a win against port rivals South Fremantle on Sunday.

Info about the day

Despite the recent win/loss ratio favouring the Bulldogs, it’s well known that anything can happen in a derby.

Coming off a disappointing loss to Claremont last week, Vice-Captain Matthew Jupp said the boys will take that as motivation into Sunday’s match.

“Last week hurt, we were so close and lost with the last kick of the day,” Jupp said.

“No loss is easy to take, but ones that you should have won are the hardest. In saying that, footy is a great game because you get a chance to change your fortunes a week later.”

Jupp said he always enjoys the high-stakes nature that comes with the Derby.

“It’s the game you play for. There is nothing better than a derby win, I hate South Freo!!”

“I debuted in an ANZAC day derby and it's probably the highlight of my career to date, every time you win one the feeling just gets sweeter. I haven't won a home derby in my playing career at EFFC, so I'm super excited to go and get it done this Sunday.”

The meaning of ANZAC day is certainly not lost on the boys.

“It's such a privilege to be able to represent our ANZACS on the football field, we can never begin to imagine the pain and sacrifice they went through to fight for our freedom, but we can repay them in a small way by fighting hard on the footy field and enjoying the beautiful life they set up for us,” Jupp said.

“We're so lucky we get to enjoy ourselves playing footy with our best mates, it's a really exciting week for a footballer, but one filled with an immense amount of respect.”

Into the extended 26-man squad this week comes James Bristow, George Hampson, Ben Harding, Chris Scott and Jesse Wynne, with the two latter potentials to make their league debut.

The Sharks injury woes took another dive during the week, with star recruit Nick Kommer ruled out of his first derby.

It took the Bulldogs three quarters to find their feet against West Perth last week, so the Sharks will need to convert early and maintain a four-quarter effort to give themselves the best opportunity for a win.

“We're playing really good footy and have just lapsed in small patches, we have been working really hard on being able to arrest momentum during quarters, so hopefully we can implement that this week,” Jupp said.

“We're building something big down at Shark Park, it's a feeling like no other I’ve experienced in my time at East Freo. This group is capable of big things, and winning these games is just the start.”

The Development League are also looking to return to the winner’s circle after a 6-point loss last week. A slow start proved costly for the boys and despite at huge fourth term they couldn’t get over the line. South Fremantle’s reserves also suffered a narrow loss in round 3, with some inaccuracy cost them the game.

Our Colts registered their first win last week and will be looking to make it two in a row.
